Broken Axle

Posted on December 11, 2025December 11, 2025 by Geoff

Got back to going for a ride each morning this week after having a week off because the my having a cold and Lorraine wasn’t much better.

This morning we decided to go around the road at the back of the high school and we successfully negotiated the dirt road leading up the hill to the school. We were travelling along without a care in the world, so I thought, until we arrived at the corner of the road which leads to the relatively steep (for us anyway) down hill.

Fortunately for me, the rear axle of my trike decided to make a clean break, allowing one of the rear wheels to travel merrily along without me and the trike attached. Obviously the trike frame hit the road with some force causing an abrupt stop. I didn’t come off the trike so there was no injury to me.

I used the word fortunately above to reinforce the fact that if the wheel had decided to stay on for another minute, I would probably have been travelling down hill, possibly at a speed of up to 35kph. I suspect I would have come off onto the bitumen probably causing enough injury to call for Ambulance and maybe a visit to the hospital.

The next problem was how were we going to get the broken trike home. It would not have fitted into the back of our car and I know our trailer had some material in it.

Our neighbour Dan is usually up early enough to be not awakened by a call at 7am and he has a ute. So I phoned him. He came and picked me and the broken trike up and delivered us home. Thanks Dan.
