The local young band with whom I work in Gayndah here played a three hour gig at the local Orange Hotel last Friday night from 8pm to 11pm. Quite a good effort given that they played close to forty songs in that time. The band’s name is Mr Percival, a name they have had since starting playing music in year 5.
The image above shows the boys playing at the Orange. From the left is Noah Teague (guitar), Noah Coulson (our grandson, guitar) and Nathan Banks (bass guitar). The boys all share the vocals which is really special given how difficult it it is some times to get boys to sing.
For those interested in the instruments, Noah Teague played a very nice Fender Jazzmaster guitar, Noah Coulson played a very upmarket Yamaha guitar and Nathan plays a five string bass guitar. They all play through Fender amplifiers. Hence what I think is a fairly reasonable sound.
You will notice there is no drummer with them. It has been difficult to find a person their age to play drums with them so we have had to use backing tracks. That has enabled them to continue playing after the earlier drummer went away to secondary school.
I thought I might join the boys for a couple of songs on alto sax. The song below is an old Bryan Ferry song called “Lets Stick Together”. It was good for me because there is only one note for the sax all the way through. And I didn’t have to learn the words because I could read them from my phone. They (we) get it easy these days.
A little after that I joined them on “Baker Street”, a song that was recorded by Gerry Rafferty and released in 1978. It originally featured a very catchy saxophone riff but was covered by the Foo Fighters and released in 1997 with the riff played on guitar. So we put them both together. The Foo Fighter’s some what heavy version and added the saxophone to cover the original Rafferty version.
Noah Coulson sang the song, Noah Teague did the guitar solo and I played the saxophone riff and solo. We can’t forget Nathan on bass – he kept it lively.
